New Cheltenham School
SANDFIELD ACADEMY
In September 2025, the Department for Education confirmed Enable Trust as the preferred sponsor for Gloucestershire’s new 200‑place special school in Cheltenham.
Gloucestershire County Council’s planning committee approved the plans for the new school on 19 March 2026, marking a significant milestone in delivering the all‑through school for pupils aged 4–16.
The £20 million school will cater for pupils with complex learning difficulties (CLD), including autism and associated communication and interaction needs. It will serve both primary and secondary aged pupils and will be built on land off Arle Road in Cheltenham.
The school is scheduled to open in 2028.
Enable Trust is delighted to be working in partnership with local schools, trusts, and Gloucestershire Local Authority to support children with complex special educational needs across the region.

Consultation on the proposed name for the new Cheltenham SEND School
Thank you to everyone who took the time to engage with and respond to the recent public consultation on the name of our new special school. We were encouraged by the level of interest and the thoughtful contributions received, which demonstrated a strong sense of pride and connection to the local community.
Following a careful review of all responses, and in collaboration with Gloucestershire County Council, a final decision has been reached. We are pleased to confirm that the new school will be named:
Sandfield Academy
This name was selected as it reflects the history and geography of the area, resonating with many of the themes highlighted during the consultation. Stakeholder feedback played an important role in shaping this decision, and we are grateful for the insights shared.
We believe that Sandfield Academy provides a strong, meaningful identity for the school as it prepares to serve the community and support future generations of learners.
